Dan and I watched Smokin’ Aces the other day (enh), and in it was an assassin who’d chewed off his fingertips to prevent himself from being identified via fingerprints.

But here’s the thing. You can only be identified by fingerprints if you’ve been fingerprinted and are in a database. And that’s not nearly as sure a thing as the movies make it appear. However, pretty much everyone has fingerprints, whether they’re logged or not.

But if you’re the guy with nothing but scar tissue on both hands, I’m thinkin’ that would put you in awfully rare company, since there probably aren’t many people at all out there who have no fingerprints. So, your lack of fingerprints would make you far more easily identifiable, especially if you’re already a known criminal.
