More sometimes…

When people are having a bad time, and their experiences sink you neck-deep into the quagmire of your own past, the kindest thing you can do sometimes is just keep your mouth shut.

Because when things are still raw, “I know what you’re going through” is not really a comfort. Pain is universally human, and utterly personal. Even less kind is that, inevitably, tagging along behind “I know what you’re going through” is the knowledge of what is going to happen tomorrow, and the day after that, and what else is going to be felt, and cruellest of all, how much time is going to have to pass before the person you’re thinking about can feel again like you do now.
