Yesterday, in a fairly large departmental meeting, I got to explain to the assembled that “y’all” was a singular usage, and its correct plural was “all y’all”. I also noted that, while the most common spelling (at least north of the border) was “y’all”, according to actual Southerners who use the phrase (and who informed me about the singular/plural), the “correct” spelling (and they acknowledge that it makes no sense) is “ya’ll”. I backed up my claims with former co-worker references from both Georgia and the Carolinas. šŸ™‚

Damned right I’m a valuable resource at this company…

Updated to add that, after a related lunchtime conversation today, I should note that the plurals of these two terms are “y’all’s” and “all y’all’s”. Oh yeah…
